How "you get your say in N days" and the missed-vote percentage are calculated

These two numbers on a member's card come from an independent, read-only-source builder, kept separate from the vote-lookup data pipeline. They are numbers, not a scorecard: this page does not rank, score, or say whether a number is good or bad.

Election countdown

Every current House member or delegate uses the federal general-election date, November 3, 2026. Senators use their official Senate class: Class II is next in 2026, Class III in 2028, and Class I in 2030, using the official Senate class pages. The day count on the card is calculated live in your browser from that date, not a stale build-time number.

A vacant seat shows its own official special-election status. When an election authority has scheduled a date, the countdown uses it. When the date is not yet set, the card says so honestly — "special election — date not yet set" — instead of guessing or hiding the seat.

Missed-vote percentage

The source is the same bundled, official-source-backed roll-call record used by the rest of this tool: 1,579 House and Senate roll calls: House votes through September 16, 2026 and Senate votes through September 24, 2026 (snapshot of September 25, 2026). Each member card prints the cutoff next to the number. For each current member:

  1. Only roll calls in that member's chamber, dated within their seated term, are considered. A later sworn-in date wins over a nominal term-start date.
  2. A roll call only counts as an eligible vote when the official roll-call record actually lists that member. This stops a record that is missing a member's row — for example, a delegate excluded from a particular vote — from being wrongly counted as an absence.
  3. The official position "Not Voting" is counted as missed. Every other recorded position — Yea, Nay, Present, or a named candidate in a leadership election — counts as cast.
  4. The missed percentage is not-voting divided by eligible votes, times 100, rounded to two decimal places.

Eligibility caveat

This is a percentage of recorded roll-call opportunities in this bundled dataset. It is not a claim about committee attendance, floor presence, motive, health, travel, or job performance, and it does not cover votes outside the bundled 119th-Congress window. Roll calls during a member's term where the official record did not list them at all are reported separately and are never folded into the missed count.

Validation

Every member's numbers must satisfy eligible = cast + not-voting, and every roll call's official rows must reconcile to current-member and former/non-current member positions. Five members are spot-checked directly against their official House Clerk or Senate roll-call pages before this data is published; any validation failure blocks publication.

These numbers are rebuilt from the same snapshot as the vote list every time the tool’s data is refreshed. They describe recorded roll calls only; they are not a judgment of the member.
